Vertical short dramas have exploded globally, with China’s market alone expected to surpass US$5 billion in 2023. These bite-sized, emotionally-charged stories are designed for mobile — fast-paced, scrollable, and strangely addictive. That addictive nature is exactly what drew me in. I wanted to understand why they work so well — and that curiosity eventually pulled me behind the camera to start making them myself.
